What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mood condition in which a person experiences periods of very high mood or energy (mania or hypomania) and periods of depression. Between episodes, many people feel well. Without treatment, episodes can disrupt work, finances and family life.
Signs of mania include very little need for sleep, racing thoughts, fast speech, overspending, unusual confidence, irritability and risky behaviour. Signs of bipolar depression include low mood, loss of interest, exhaustion, hopelessness and, in some cases, thoughts of self-harm.What Is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a medical condition that affects how a person thinks, perceives and relates to the world. It is not a "split personality", and people with schizophrenia are far more likely to be vulnerable than dangerous.
Common symptoms include hearing voices or seeing things others do not (hallucinations), fixed false beliefs such as being followed or controlled (delusions), confused speech, withdrawal from family and friends, and loss of motivation. Symptoms often begin in late teens or twenties, and early treatment generally leads to better long-term outcomes.
